Handcrafted Segmented, Turned and Scrolled Wooden Bowls

From the workshop of Belvedere Woodcraft, owned by David McKibbin, woodworker, woodturner, and picture framer in Taupō, New Zealand, these segmented bowls are unique. Handcrafted from a range of native and exotic woods, the timber is either recycled or sourced from trees that have been removed for safety reasons or due to die-back.

Segmented Bowls
Each bowl starts with a base disc of solid wood, and then small segments are individually glued on, one by one. The first layer is sanded flat, and a second layer is applied. All bowls have 72 segments per row. A bowl takes approximately 35 hours to complete. Once finished, the bowl is sprayed with lacquer for a polished look.

David works with 14 different types of wood, both native and exotic. Each piece is carefully selected for its unique grain and colour, ensuring every bowl is one of a kind. The glue used is water-resistant and very strong, ensuring a lasting finish. In the photos, you can see the custom-made segment cutting jig and the assembly setup, both of which help ensure precision in the craftsmanship. To clean, simply blow out any dust with a hair dryer or similar, and wipe with a dry cloth. Each bowl is a true testament to the skill and dedication that goes into creating these unique works of art.
